The Origin of the Species

Survival of the fittest or natural selection

Determines what variations survive. Variations better structured to survive prevail while less able species become extinct

Divergence of character provides the best chance for survival. Inter breeding causes less divergence and thus a higher chance of extinction. As groups become smaller, inter breeding increases and thus pushes that group closer to extinction.

Groups that are similar are most likely to compete against each other as they tend to compete for the same resources
